USS Bainbridge

Four ships of the United States Navy have been named USS Bainbridge, after William Bainbridge, a notable commodore of the early Navy.

• The first Bainbridge was a 12-gun brig commissioned in 1842 and lost off Cape Hatteras in 1863.

• The second Bainbridge (DD-1) was the first destroyer of the Navy, serving from 1902 to 1919.

• The third Bainbridge (DD-246) was also a destroyer, commissioned in 1920, on convoy escort duty throughout World War II, and sold shortly after the end of the war.

• The fourth Bainbridge (CGN-25) was a nuclear guided missile cruiser in service from 1962 to 1996.
