Aleksandr Tikhonov earned his fourth straight gold medal.
Nikolay Zimyatov earned three gold medals in cross-country skiing.
Eric Heiden won all five speed skating races.
An unfancied amateur United States ice hockey team win the gold medal, defeating Finland in the final. Their extraordinary upset victory over the heavy favourite Soviet team in the semifinal becomes known as the "Miracle On Ice" in the US press.
